Dew Drops + Sunblock

By Natalie Janovak

Inspired by the folk stylings of Elisa Pope and Memphis Minnie McGnarls.

There’s a fire inside me that seeks a path home

Snaking up my spine, burning deep and churning wide

My life full to the brim with memories that burn

Consuming all to reveal a key

That I recognize as eternity

This fire is both gentle and harsh

A new beginning, like so many times before

The choice to flow like water

Be still like a dewdrop or shade your shell from the burn

In my shell I kindle, I love and learn

The forces inside tear between the cold and burn

Through layers of skin that give and resist

Trading the past for the ever-present

Emerging with wings spread wide and the inferno inside

Still burning but no longer yearning

To return to the past

To learn about the stuff I’m made of

Face forward and ride the wind

This fire is both gentle and harsh

A new beginning, like so many times before

The choice to flow like water

Be still like a dewdrop or shade your shell from the burn

Serpentine fire, spiraling out

A wildfire to feed your wind

Dancing upward, all light and pure heat

Licking the night abyss like an ice cream cone

And at that last bite you are left wanting

The weight of gravity and time consume the moment

Embers smoulder, always seeking fuel

And the forces inside tear between the elements

Animate my hands and heart

One footprint at a time

Until I am home again

And this fire is both gentle and harsh

A new beginning, like so many times before

The choice to flow like water

Be still like a dewdrop or shade your shell from the burn
