Vinegars, Teas and Remedies

I’ve been transitioning to a vegetarian diet and seeking to enhance dishes using beans, veggies, breads and crusts with fresh garden herbs and infused vinegars. And I do enjoy a good pot of tea. Then, the other day, a rare gift came in the form of a Nickel Ad. Food & Tea Sampling Class…vinegars…herbs.

Huckleberry Haven Tea House offers a homegrown context for the ancient practice of tea service, and seasons it exquisitely with quality information and interaction. To me, the Food & Tea class felt like an afternoon in the kitchen with my girlfriends and our moms.  I look forward to meeting them for High Tea when they are in town.

Ruth and Ian Leslie, former owners of the Huckleberry Haven Bed and Breakfast, opened their doors to tea services that include cream, sweet, and savory tea flights, each presented with a selection of homegrown and home-baked breads, sweets or savory bites.

Today’s tea service included Ruth’s cooking demonstration using Hanna’s all-natural herb seasonings, infused vinegars and tea blends. As Ruth alternated between preparing and serving dishes and teas, Hanna Kinsell answered our questions about herbs and overall health and wellbeing.

Hanna has been using homegrown herbs her entire life, after experiencing their healthful benefits as a child in her native Germany.  Her knowledge and experience are undoubtedly vast enough to fill volumes, and the flavor from her garden is beyond comparison. Hanna’s Inner City Herb Garden is inTwisp,WA and offers a range of all-natural products, in addition to planting consultations, potpourri and gift baskets. Call 509.997.2319 for more information.

I bought a bottle of Hanna’s Summer Savory Vinegar for my 5-Bean Cranberry Salad, and three pounds of bing cherries that Ian picked that morning. I also won a bar of Hanna’s Methow Fresh Soap in a drawing that was held between servings.

The Afternoon Tea offers your choice of two tea services and the High Tea celebrates the whole bounty of pairings. Huckleberry Haven’s garden grounds and atmosphere are quaint and warm and located towards the top of Okanogan Street. The food is fresh, healthful and creatively presented.

Ruth and Hanna are both delightful and knowledgeable. Their innovative Food & Tea class was an experience that I’d recommend to anyone who’d enjoy sharing an afternoon with a friend and a bottomless pot of tea. Make reservations at Huckleberry Haven by calling 509.881.9349 and plan to be there a few hours; apparently the herbal disease is visiting…and time flies when you’re having fun.
